This is a rare opportunity to own a Derek Anderson original painting from outside the world of his published works. Derek's personal artwork is driven by curiosity and a fascination with the world and how each and every one of us sees it differently. His bold compositions, interesting characters and fearless approach to creating are as much a part of his personal work as they are his published books.
From the Artist...
"I painted this fellow in April 2011. I don't know if it was raining at the time or if I just wanted to explore drizzly rain effects. I laid in the atmosphere and ground with as little brushwork as possible to keep the focus on the character. This pig has a bit of mystery to him with his umbrella, glasses, hat and overcoat, so I gave the painting a title that reflects that curiosity. It's a long title that doesn't give you any answers. It just causes you to want to know more, which is exactly what a good painting should do." -Derek Anderson

Miss Cow
$185
17.25" X 13"
Edition of 250
Giclee on Velvet Fine Art Paper
Derek Anderson's book Story County: Here We Come! began with this picture. He sat down one day, intent on creating a character out of very simple shapes. Miss Cow was the result. Through the magic of paint, she came to life and inspired the book about five friends - a farmer, dog, pig, chicken and cow that come together and make their own farm. Derek is a tireless creator. Long before he ever works on the actual pictures that appear in a book, he spends months experimenting with drawings and paintings of the characters and their world. Published here for the first time, Miss Cow is one of those pictures.
From the Artist...
"I grew up in Story County. That may sound like an imaginary place, especially coming from an author and artist, but in my case it's true. Story County is real. It lies in the center of Iowa, right in the heart of the heartland. Story County is an absolutely magical place. It's where I learned to write and draw, and where I first discovered the power of the imagination. We all have the power to imagine- to dream big dreams for our lives and then chase after them. This picture of Miss Cow grew out of a need to get back to the basics of drawing, creating the way I did when I was growing up in Story County. Back in those days, absolutely anything was possible. I created fearlessly with simple shapes and outlines. Sometimes we need to return to our roots, to find a way back to the basic things we learned as children. For me, that will always mean coming back to story." -Derek Anderson

From the Artist...
"When I first sketched this piece, I'd made the character wearing the raincoat human. I did multiple drawings of him for months, experimenting with different body shapes and expressions. It wasn't until I made him an elephant that the piece sprang to life. That's when I discovered the deeper meaning. There's something magical about a rainy day that sparks the imagination. While the world outside is transformed by stormy weather, we're often trapped inside with only our thoughts. Whether this is actually an elephant wearing a coat of rain or an ordinary man whose imagination has run away on a rainy day is up to each individual's interpretation." -Derek Anderson
