LQ Counts

Splashing Beneath the Surface
of Little Quack

Of course we all know that subtext exists. There are always deeper meanings than what we first encounter on the written page- it's the very reason that book groups exist. We've all read books and wondered what the author was really trying to say. However this depth of analyzation is highly subjective and usually reserved for lengthy novels and chapter books.

And while professional reviewers often touch on meaning and motivation, it's rare to see someone delve into the existential meaning of a children's picture book or the even-younger concept book. But a writer for Entertainment Weekly did just that with a recent write up about Little Quack Loves Colors and Little Quack Counts. The article is called Kid Lit 101: Deconstructing 'Little Quack.' You really have to read this one and decide for yourself.

We've posted a link HERE.

Derek is in a Television Commercial?

Well, sort of. Last fall, Derek traveled back to his alma mater in Ames, Iowa to receive a very special award- the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award presented by the Iowa State University Alumni Association. While Derek was attending the awards luncheon, he was asked by a representative from the university if he would be willing to have a very brief version of his college experience featured in a commercial. Derek had a great experience at Iowa State, and is so pleased with what they put together.

Hot Rod Hamster Review in SLJ

Hot Rod Hamster was recently reviewed by the fine folks at School Library Journal. The review begins, "Kids will be in the driver's seat, bonding with the hot-rod hamster as he sallies forth into a bulldog's junkyard to put together his very own race car."

First Review of Hot Rod Hamster!

The first review of Hot Rod Hamster is in from Kirkus Reviews and it's fabulous! They say, "Newbery Honor author Lord’s picture-book debut is a rollicking, roaring read." And about Derek's paintings, "Anderson’s fluffy, jaunty illustrations are as full of energy as the rhymes." Thanks Kirkus!

Derek Receives Outstanding
Young Alumnus Award

In October 2009, Derek traveled to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by the ISU Alumni Association. Derek is so appreciative of this recognition. Below is an excerpt from the ceremonial program:

In a society increasingly rife with competition for children's attention, Derek Anderson has grabbed it, captivated it, and nourished it.

His New York Times best-selling children's book Little Quack and the 11 others he has created or helped to create, have truly inspired children. Little Quack and Little Quack's Bedtime both received the National Parenting Publication Gold Award, and Little Quack and Little Quack's New Friend received the International Reading Association/Children's Book Council Children's Choice Award.

Anderson regularly speaks to and works with children, as well as other writers and artists, to offer his expertise and share his contagious, youthful joy. He was asked by the Minnesota State Supreme Court to speak to disadvantaged youth, and his tale of a colorful purple gorilla with a nose for bananas, Gladys Goes Out to Lunch, was the featured book for Minnesota libraries in 2007.

Two illustrations from Anderson's latest book, Ballyhoo Bay (written by Judy Sierra), were recently featured in the ISU College of Design alumni exhibition "30 and Beyond." He was selected as "Favorite Author of the month" in February 2005 by the Red House Book Club, and his books have also been distributed in boxes of Cheerios as part of the "Spoonfuls of Stories" program.

Ballyhoo Bay on Today!

On December 3rd, Jeff Hingher of Cheerios appeared on NBC's Today Show to talk about Spoonfuls of Stories. While holding copies of the five books in Cheerios this year (with Ballyhoo Bay on top), Hingher told Today host, Al Roker, about the donations they will be making to the Today Show's annual toy drive.

Pick Up a Copy in Specially Marked Boxes Today!

It's that time of year again, and the fine folks at General Mills have selected Ballyhoo Bay as one of their featured books in boxes of Cheerios. The tale of Mira Bella, an art teacher who loves the beach, her students and Ballyhoo Bay challenges builders who come in and want to develop condos and high-rise apartments on the beach. Appearing as a part of the hugely successful Spoonfuls of Stories program, Ballyoo Bay is being distributed in more than a million specially marked boxes of Cheerios.

Derek is honored to once again have his work included as a part of this amazing reading program. Many thanks to the folks at General Mills! Thanks also to First Book for all of their great work, and to Simon & Schuster who helped make it possible.

If you're interested, your family can make a donation to First Book using special donation forms included on Cheerios boxes. One hundred percent of the funds will be used to buy books and the donations will be sorted by zip code, with books going back to the communities where the donations came from.
